Being the Parent of a Diabetic Child

I felt the overwhelming need to get some of this off my chest. This emotional roller coaster my family and myself have been on takes more of a toll than most of you know. So please bear with me and accept my appreciation for allowing me to share this story with all of you.

On Dec 16th, 2010 my sweet precious little girl was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It came as a total shock to my husband and I. Naturally it was devastating and overwhelming as we took hours of classes on how to take care of her once we got her home. 4 shots minimum and 4 finger pricks minimum. It felt like a horrible dream. A nightmare that I would’ve given anything to wake up from.

More than anything, my heart broke for my daughter. She was 3 at the time of her diagnosis. Even now at 4 there’s no way she can fully understand the weight of the situation.The amazing thing is how fantastic Maddy (my daughter) has been about all this. She takes her shots like a champ and even reminds me of things that I may forget. She’s unbelievable and I’m extremely lucky to have a child like her.

But it doesn’t stop me from living in constant fear and hating myself every time I have to stick that needle in her. I’ve had many people ask me, “How do you do it?” concerning all that goes along with being the parent of a diabetic child. My answer? I have to.

I may not want to and I may hate every second of it, but she’s everything to me and I will do whatever it takes to keep her healthy. When it’s your child in danger, you just do what you have to do.
